PARKERSBURG - Construction on a new Department of Motor Vehicles office in south Parkersburg is rapidly progressing.

Though the project had to be rebid in March and the date of the opening pushed back several months, Natalie Harvey, public information director for the West Virginia Division of Motor Vehicles, said Friday the project is well under way.

"Construction is going great," she said. "We are looking at a projected opening date of Oct. 1."

The new West Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles offices are taking shape on Lubeck Avenue on Parkersburg’s south side.

Harvey said the project was rebid after initial bids came in too high. Though she had no immediate details on the new bid, she said the scope of the project had not changed.

"It is still pretty much the same," she said.

Nyle Fisher with the West Virginia Department of Transportation Maintenance Division did not return a call seeking comment concerning project contracts.

In March officials announced they would rebid the project after initial bids came in around $3 million for a planned 9,000-square-foot building on Lubeck Avenue.

The old DMV office on Dudley Avenue was abruptly closed a year ago because of problems with the building, including mold. Mold is also believed to be a problem at the DMV's current temporary facility adjacent to National College. The issue was raised after some employees, reportedly suffering from illness and respiratory issues, raised concerns about possible mold.

Earlier this year state officials announced plans to build a permanent site on Lubeck Avenue, near the future site of the regional offices. DMV officials said construction bids for the should be awarded in March and the facility would open by late summer.

The plan to rebid the project moved that opening date to October.
