Stewart, former WVU football coach, dead

Former West Virginia University football coach Bill Stewart died this afternoon of an apparent heart attack at age 59, Mike Fragale, assistant athletic director at WVU, said in a statement issued shortly before 3:30 p.m.

Stewart collapsed on the 17th hole while playing golf with former Mountaineer athletic director Ed Pastilong at the Stonewall Resort on Monday in the West Virginia Hospitality and Tourism Association's annual golf outing.

Stewart a New Martinsville native, served as WVU's head football coach beginning with the Fiesta Bowl on Jan. 2, 2008, and continuing through his resignation on June 10, 2011.

He compiled a record of 28-12, including a pair of bowl wins.
