Williamstown wins state football title
WHEELING —Let the celebration begin! Williamstown High School is the Class A state football champion of West Virginia! On a cold Saturday night at Wheeling Island Stadium, the 2008 Yellowjackets accomplished what no other Williamstown team ever had done. They won the first state football championship in school history, beating a game Weirton Madonna squad, 23-7, in the championship game. To say the state title has been a long time coming is an understatement. Williamstown started playing football in 1919. It has witnessed 10 undefeated regular seasons, including five consecutive years from 2002 to 2006 without a loss. Those years were part of Williamstown’s state record regular season winning streak of 57 games. While the regular season had been good to Williamstown, resulting in 12 Little Kanawha Conference championships, the playoffs hadn’t been so kind.
