Parkersburg Homecoming 2008

Field for men’s race has many contenders

August 22, 2008

PARKERSBURG — Ask race director Chip Allman who is in the elite men’s field for Saturday’s 22nd running of the News and Sentinel Half Marathon and he could easily respond, “Who’s not.’’ Allman has managed to put together one of the most talented and deepest fields in recent half marathon history. A field so talented and so deep he started turning away some runners who waited until the last minute to inquire about running here. A field that starts with defending champion Alene Reta of Ethiopia, who turned in an impressive performance last year, winning the race in 1 hour, 2 minutes and 39 seconds, just 14 seconds off the course record set by Kenyan Steve Kogo in 1990. Reta won last year’s race by a 12-second margin over second place finisher Reuben Chebii of Kenya, who also will be back. Reta knows what it is like to finish second here as he had done so on his two previous Parkersburg appearances before breaking the winner’s tape last year.
