Ohio in, W.Va. out in first round of Race to the Top grants
CHARLESTON - West Virginia is out, but Ohio is among the finalists in, but West Virginia is out of the The administration Thursday announced the states winning a slice of the $4.35 billion in federal Race to the Top education funds. West Virginia wasn't among the first round finalists of 15 states and the District of Columbia, according to the U.S. Department of Education. The decision means Gov. Joe Manchin may call a special session of the Legislature to consider changes to the educational system and programs to improve West Virginia's second round competitiveness for the money. Manchin on Monday asked the state Senate to back off legislation creating charter schools pending the announcement by the Department of Education. The second round of grant applications are due in June while an announcement is expected in August. The state applied for $80 million in the first round.
