Catholic boys play for berth
PARKERSBURG — While it’s true the boys basketball team from Parkersburg Catholic is one of 16 still standing, the Crusaders of head coach Joe Garrett have a big opportunity in front of them at 7 p.m. today when Madonna invades for a Class A, Region I, showdown which gives the winner a berth in next week’s state basketball tournament. The Blue Dons of head man George Vargo led two-time defending state champion Wheeling Central by scores of 13-0 and 22-6 in their sectional final, but eventually fell to the Maroon Knights 65-55. Not only did that drop Madonna to 9-14 on the campaign, but a Blue Dons team which features no senior starters also has to win on the road tonight if they want to continue their season. Coach Garrett, in his fifth year at the helm of PCHS, will try and take a senior-laden squad to the big show. A victory against the Blue Dons would mark the Crusaders’ first trip to Charleston under Garrett.
